Tune In to the November 'In Touch with Durham County' Show
We welcome Durham County Food Security Coordinator Mary Oxendine and Veteran Services Officer Jonathan Crooms

Durham, N.C. - The Durham County Public Information Office continues to bring residents important information on our programs and services with the "In Touch with Durham County" show for November 2022<https://youtu.be/aCEzp5FiMAI>.

The show is available to watch on the DCo YouTube channel here<https://youtu.be/aCEzp5FiMAI>; as well as on the Durham County Government website<https://www.dconc.gov/county-departments/departments-f-z/public-information/the-durham-county-government-show> and the Durham Television Network<https://durhamnc.gov/1104/Durham-Television-Network>.

In this month's episode<https://youtu.be/aCEzp5FiMAI>, host Deborah Craig-Ray, General Manager of Strategic Planning and Innovation, welcomes Durham County Food Security Coordinator Mary Oxendine and Veteran Services Officer Jonathan Crooms.

Oxendine has been extremely busy since she was hired as the first Food Security Coordinator in Spring 2021. Oxendine leads and coordinates county-level efforts to address food insecurity in our community - which was exacerbated by COVID-19. She talks about her work within the community to develop a comprehensive, equitable, and sustainable approach to addressing the root causes of food insecurity in Durham County.

She will also talk about how Durham County's community efforts to address food security have caught the attention of Washington, D.C., as US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen visited to talk about Durham has used funding to support these efforts. A day later, Oxendine participated in the first White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition and Health at the White House. This was the first such conference at the White House in 50 years.

In segment two, Crooms visits to talk about exciting events and programs that Durham County Veteran Services is invested in during the month of November. First, the department is thrilled to announce that its annual Veterans Day Recognition and Celebration program is back in person for the first time since 2019 as we emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic. The program will be held on Thursday, November 10 and features a full agenda of speakers.

Veteran Services is also teaming up with the National Association of Counties in welcoming all of Durham County to participate in Operation Green Light. By placing a green light bulb in your house or place of business from November 7-13, this simple gesture helps shine a light to support military veterans, as well as raise awareness about the unique challenges faced by many veterans and the resources that are available at the county, state, and federal level to assist veterans and their families.
