Durham Hosts Inaugural Day of Remembrance for Gun-Related Homicide Victims

What: Inaugural Day of Remembrance for Gun-Related Homicide Victims

Who: City of Durham Mayor Elaine O'Neal, City Council, and Mayors Against Illegal Guns

When: Friday, December 30, 2022 at 3 p.m.

Where: CCB Plaza in front of "Major" the Bull, 201 N. Corcoran St., Durham, N.C. 27701

Event Facts:

*         On December 30, Mayors Against Illegal Guns<https://mayors.everytown.org> is asking cities across the country to commemorate the lives of the victims lost this year and to demand an end to gun-related violence.



*         Durham will join this national commemoration and stand in solidarity for the Inaugural Day of Remembrance for Gun-Related Homicide Victims.


*         As part of this nationwide observance, Durham and the other participating communities are holding ceremonies in remembrance of the victims of gun violence.


*         During tomorrow's ceremony<https://www.durhamnc.gov/CivicAlerts.aspx?AID=3315>, Mayor Elaine O'Neal and members of the Durham City Council will acknowledge each of the 43 lives lost in Durham in 2022, and issue a call for action to end gun violence.


*         At the ceremony, a single balloon will be released to commemorate the lives of the victims, and each person's name will be read aloud.


*         In addition to Durham, the following cities have signed on to this initiative: New York, New York; Newark, New Jersey; Mount Vernon, New York; Chicago, Illinois; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Baltimore, Maryland; Atlanta, Georgia; Washington, D.C.; Louisville, Kentucky; Jacksonville, Florida; Charlotte, North Carolina; and Minneapolis, Minnesota.
