County to Recognize Memorial Day 2023

Most County offices will close on Monday, May 29


Durham, N.C. - Durham County Government will close most offices in recognition of the Memorial Day holiday on Monday, May 29, 2023. All County offices will reopen with their normal hours of operation on Tuesday, May 30. Residents should note that some County offices continue to operate with limited on-site staff due to COVID-19 guidelines and that some services require appointments.

Durham County General Services

Convenience Centers



The Durham County General Services Department will close all three of its solid waste and recycling convenience sites on May 29. Durham County residents with a current 2022-2023 solid waste decal can resume disposal of garbage, recycling and yard waste at the County's Convenience sites on May 30. The Northern and Redwood sites open at 7 a.m. and the Parkwood site opens at 10:30 a.m.



Roadside Recycling



The Durham County roadside recycling schedule for customers normally serviced the week of May 29 will maintain the same schedule. All residents are reminded to set out their recycling bins before 6 a.m. on the day of pickup, to avoid a missed collection.

Residents who want to keep track of their recycling collection schedule should download the new "Durham County Recycles" mobile application. Residents can download the mobile app for free on Apple devices in the App Store<https://apps.apple.com/app/id1481279900> or Android devices in the Google Play Store<https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=gov.dconc.recollect.waste>.

Durham County Library



All Durham County Library locations will be closed on Monday, May 29 in observance of Memorial Day. All locations will reopen on Tuesday, May 30 for regular business hours.

Durham County Public Health



The Durham County Department of Public Health (DCoDPH) will follow the Durham County Government Memorial Day holiday schedule, closing on Monday, May 29 and reopening on Tuesday, May 30.



For Public Health emergencies during the holiday closure, including communicable disease reporting, environmental health and suspected foodborne illnesses, call 911 and ask for the Durham County Department of Public Health's response team member on-call.



The walk-in COVID-19 vaccination clinic will reopen on Wednesday, May 31. A reminder that all people ages 6 months and older are eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine. Durham County Social Services



The Durham County Department of Social Services (DSS) will follow the Durham County Government Memorial Day schedule, closing on Monday, May 29 and reopening on Tuesday, May 30.



Residents are encouraged to call 919-560-4600 to reach an on-call social worker to report child abuse and neglect. Call 984-243-1280 to report adult abuse and neglect to reach an on-call social worker. DSS will reopen and operate according to its normal hours of operation on Tuesday, May 30.

Durham County Sheriff



Durham County's Sheriff Office's patrol division, as always, is available 24/7. The Sheriff's Administration and Records Division will be closed on May 29 and will reopen on May 30.

Durham County Cooperative Extension

The Durham County Cooperative Extension will close on Monday, May 29 for the Memorial Day holiday and reopen on Tuesday, May 30 with normal business hours. Extension programming scheduled for Mondays will not be held.

During the holiday closure, the public may drop off soil sample boxes and pick up sample supplies from the outside station located in the blue box to the right of the Extension building at 721 Foster St.

Memorial Day Remembrance Event

The Durham County Veteran Services Department invites all residents and visitors to attend its annual Memorial Day Remembrance Event on Monday, May 29 at 9 a.m. in the fourth floor conference room inside the Administration II Building, 201 E. Main St.

We will commemorate the national day of mourning with a ceremony honoring America's military service members who died while serving their country, including a roll call of the more than 350 known active-duty service members from Durham County who died at war.
