City of Durham Storm Recovery Update

Downed Trees and Power Lines Still Impacting Many Streets and Traffic Signals;

Free Storm Debris Removal Available for City Residents

DURHAM, N.C. - In the aftermath of the severe weather experienced in Durham on Tuesday, August 15, City of Durham staff have been hard at work to help the community recover.

Curbside Solid Waste Collections

Solid Waste Management crews worked today to complete curbside garbage collections. Due to downed trees and power lines, the following areas were not collected today:

  *   Parts of Dearborn Drive
  *   Danube Lane
  *   Knox Street
  *   Monmouth Avenue
  *   Bay Street
  *   600 block Belmont Drive
  *   Chandler Road
  * 2600 block of Mansfield Avenue
  * Hyde Park off Holloway Street

Residents are asked to keep their carts curbside if they did not receive their collections today. Solid Waste crews will return to areas that can't be accessed by the end of this week when streets are clear. Today's bulky item pickups will also be rescheduled.

Free Curbside Storm Debris Removal

The Solid Waste Management Department is providing free curbside collection of storm debris for city residents. Curbside collection instructions are as follows:

  * Place tree limbs and brush by the curb by end of the day on Sunday, August 20.
  * Make sure all limbs are shorter than 6 feet long and less than 2 inches in diameter.
  * Give crews through Friday, August 25 to complete the cleanup in areas affected by the storm. If residents place properly prepared debris on their curbs by August 20 and it's not collected by August 25, they should submit a bulky brush service request online<https://www.durhamnc.gov/4454/Solid-Waste-Customer-Service> at or contact Durham One Call at 919-560-1200.
  * Residents should be mindful of downed power lines and other hazards when preparing brush setouts.
  * Storm debris should be set out clear of obstructions such as fire hydrants, fences, vehicles, trees, mailboxes, or anything that could interfere with the operation of the mechanical collection arm.

Closed Streets Listing

The Durham Police Department is asking motorists to obey any road closures and to not drive past any barricades or signs that have been placed in the roadway. Barricades have been placed at these locations to protect the public. If approaching an intersection without working traffic lights, drivers should treat the intersection like a four-way stop. Road closures will continue to be updated on the police department's webpage<https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/e/2PACX-1vTtG6tb4bs_wunlePAf4vgZOpxkVsS2DI8vrx-0SuZotrcgQZmirzknFb1gbqJ4SeAzhuLgYx7OG3mf/pubhtml>.

Traffic Signal Restorations

Transportation staff mobilized temporary power generators at the following four intersections along Durham-Chapel Hill Boulevard to operate the traffic signals at these busy intersections until power can be restored.

  *   Shannon Road
  *   Tower Boulevard
  *   Westgate Drive
  *   Garrett Road

At the peak of this storm, more than 200 traffic signals lost power. Transportation staff are working to rebuild damaged traffic signals at Gregson Street and Markham Avenue, Science Drive and Cameron Boulevard, and Cranford Road and Morehead Avenue. More traffic signals will become operational as power restoration efforts continue.

Urban Forestry Tree Removal Efforts
The General Services Department's Urban Forestry Division triaged 135 service requests for fallen trees and limbs blocking city streets and other issues related to this weather event. Urban Forestry crews will continue to remove trees from city streets as Duke Energy addresses power lines entangled with fallen trees in the roadways.
