All persons on the Coalition for Affordable Housing & Transit Mailing List,

A flyer promoting the 2023 version of the Durham Low-Income Homeowners
Relief (LIHR) Program is attached.  Please read it, copy it, and share
the information as soon as possible with any low-income homeowners who may
be able to benefit from the program.  They could get their property tax
bill reduced by 40% to 60% or even completely paid if they have extremely
low income and are 60 years of age or older.  The full payment is one
important change in the program this year.

The second change is that the LIHR grant can be requested at *any time in
2024* until a new pay bill is received mid-year.  So, even if the property
owner has already paid their property tax, they can still get reimbursed
the amount to which they are entitled.  Our promotional efforts should
continue well into the new year even though the property tax bill is due on
Jan. 5.

Note that two of the organizations supporting this flyer will provide
assistance by telephone to property owners.  The phone numbers to call at
the Community Empowerment Fund and Reinvestment Partners are provided at
the end of page 2.

The larger possible tax payment and the extended time to apply for the
program will hopefully increase the number of LIHR grant recipients.  The
number for 2021 was 204 and for 2022 was 338.

One note about meeting plans for the Coalition this month.  Because the
third Monday is a holiday, we will be meeting on Tuesday, January 16 at Noon
