Durham Opens Emergency Shelter Due to Extended Power Outage



DURHAM, N.C. - Due to the extended power outage<https://outagemap.duke-energy.com/#/current-outages/ncsc> impacting thousands of Duke Energy customers in East Durham, the Durham City-County Emergency Management Department<https://www.dconc.gov/county-departments/departments-a-e/emergency-management> is opening an emergency shelter later today.



The shelter's location is at the old Northern High School, located at 117 Tom Wilkinson Rd. This emergency shelter will open at 8 p.m. and will remain open until power is restored.



Food and sleeping cots will be provided for up to 150 residents in need. Residents should bring any medications and other personal clothing and hygiene items needed during their stay.



GoDurham<https://godurhamtransit.org/> will provide free transportation to the emergency shelter from their Wellons Village bus stop.



The Durham County Main Library, located at 300 N. Roxboro St., will operate as a warming center until 8 p.m. today. The following regional library branches will operate as warming centers until 6 p.m. today:

  *   East Regional Branch, 211 Lick Creek Ln.
  *   North Regional Branch, 221 Milton Rd.
  *   South Regional Branch, 4505 S. Alston Ave.
  *   Southwest Regional Branch, 605 Shannon Rd.



Residents who need food today are encouraged to contact Durham One Call<https://www.durhamnc.gov/1439/Durham-One-Call> at 919-560-1200 until 5 p.m.



Durham Congregations in Action<https://www.dcia.org/> is also providing free food to Durham Housing Authority residents in the impacted area. Residents who need free food may also visit Communities in Partnership<https://communitiesinpartnership.org/>, located at 101 S. Driver St.
