County Veteran Services to Honor Memorial Day
Event on May 27 at 9 a.m. in front of Administration I Building

Durham, N.C. - Residents and visitors planning to observe Memorial Day 2024 are invited to join Durham County Veteran Services as they commemorate the National Day of Mourning. The ceremony honoring America's military service members who died while serving their country will take place at 9 a.m. on Monday, May 27, 2024, in front of the county Administration I building, 200 E. Main Street.

The ceremony will begin with the playing of "The Star-Spangled Banner" followed by the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance. The Memorial Day ceremony will honor two of its Distinguished Gold Star Spouses, residents whose husbands were killed while on active duty:

  *   Daisy Clayton, her husband, Army Specialist Curvin Clayton, was killed in Vietnam on September 13, 1970, at age 20;
  * Marsha R. Riely, her husband, Air Force Major Michael William Riely, was killed in the line of duty on May 12, 1982, while flying a C130 in Little Rock, Arkansas.

"We would like to honor our Gold Star spouses and their families who reside here in Durham," said Durham County Veteran Services Director Lois Harvin-Ravin. "Military Gold Star Spouses are individuals who lost their spouse in military service to the United States. The term Gold Star comes from the tradition of families displaying a service flag in their home with the gold star representing their family member who has died while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. The Gold Star signifies the ultimate sacrifice made by the service member and acknowledges the profound loss experienced by their family."

In addition to highlighting these two special guests, we extend our heartfelt remembrance to the families of the 365 known veterans from Durham County who have died in service to our nation and their extraordinary courage and sacrifices of their loved ones as we honor Gold Star families across the United States.

The public is invited to help call the roll of Durham County's more than 350 known active-duty service members who died while at war. The program also includes the Prisoners of War/Missing in Action (POW/MIA) table presentation recognizing military personnel taken as prisoners of war or listed as missing in action. The ceremony will conclude with the laying of a wreath at the county's war memorials followed by the playing of "Taps," performed by military officials at burial and memorial services.

The event is free, and light refreshments will be provided. Parking is available both on the street and in municipal parking garages. In the event of inclement weather, the event will be held indoors on the floor of the Administration II building (201 E. Main Street).

Join us in paying tribute to the valor and sacrifice of all our fallen heroes and their families.
