All are invited to two events commemorating Pfc Booker T. Spicely, a soldier stationed at Camp Butner, who was shot twice on July 8, 1944, after he challenged Jim Crow seating on a city bus. Watts Hospital refused to admit the soldier and he died shortly after.

First, on Sunday evening, July 7, the amazing writer and actor Mike Wiley will do an initial reading of his one-man play about Pfc. Spicely. The reading will take place at the NorthStar Church of the Arts on Geer St in Durham. Registration and more details here:https://www.eventbrite.com/e/same-thing-change-registration-925452291717?utm_experiment=test_share_listing&aff=ebdsshios
Second, on Monday evening, July 8, the 80th anniversary of Pfc. Spicely’s death, the public is invited to attend a vigil at West Club Blvd & Berkeley, the site of the shooting.  You are invited to gather at 7:30 p.m. for brief remarks, followed by the lighting of candles.
Hosted by the Booker T. Spicely committee.
