Durham’s history is literally written in stone in Historic Maplewood
Cemetery. Here are laid to rest millionaires and paupers, saints and
scallywags. On the tour we will tell stories of triumph, tragedy, fame,
and misfortune – all in one of Durham’s loveliest open spaces. On
Saturday, Preservation Durham will lead interesting walks in the oldest
part of the cemetery. We will talk about the Dukes, of course – the rich
ones and the poor ones, but we will cover so much more. Hear about the boy
who was killed by a lion, about Gill Cates, the first Durham police officer
killed in the line of duty, and about Mary Dowd Walker, the reformer who
was North Carolina’s first woman judge. Learn about Ritta Geer, the first
African-American buried in the formerly all-white cemetery and about Pauli
Murray’s fight to tear down the fence that once separated Maplewood from
her family’s cemetery next door. We will visit the beautiful Hebrew
Cemetery and the grave of Nurse Thompson, gentle heroine of the Spanish
Flu. We will discuss who shot Major Lloyd and the tragedy of Ora Johnson’s
false teeth.
Preservation Durham will operate three tours continuously all day. Each
tour is a loop that covers a different part of the cemetery. *Tour-goers
may come anytime between 9:30 a.m. and 4 p.m.* and join a tour in
progress. Shift from tour to tour or do all three! Each tour takes about
an hour and fifteen minutes. Look for the Preservation Durham tent at
the *Kent
Street entrance near Morehead Avenue*. Buy tickets in advance online here:
https://www.preservationdurham.org/tours , or get your tickets at the
Preservation Durham tent at the cemetery on Saturday. The weather will be
glorious! Wear sensible shoes!
