Re-Imagining the Durham Freeway: In phase 1 of the project, the project team went to over 40 events, to understand the history of the freeway and its harms, to think about how central Durham once was – and could potentially be – connected, and to give permission to think what it could be. They did both conventional workshops and went to community events seeking diverse participants who might not go to conventional workshops. The respondents interact with the freeway and the area around it in different ways (drive, bike, take the bus, and so on), and had a number of concerns, starting with safety but also including a lot of sense of past harm. Some people feel the freeway should be re-routed out of town, others wanted improvements like longer ramps, and still others wanted something greener, better for pedestrians, and able to restore community. The project then created a toolbox of things that could be done, which is the subject a Phase 2 that will start in November. There is a “background booklet” with information, which includes the history and impacts of the freeway, to help participants complete a 1-page survey. The themes of the next phase are history and a sense of belonging, mobility (including biking, walking and rolling), safety, sustainability, and equitable land use. Under each theme is a “toolbox” of six ideas; members of the community will be asked to choose up to 3 ideas from each theme, and, if they wish, pinpoint where on a map we should be using that ideas to create a community-driven vision. The materials will be available on https://www.durhamnc.gov/5201/Reimagine-Durham-Freeway. The project would be happy to come out to neighborhoods to talk about the work and there was some discussion about this.
There’s nothing new to report about revamping the website.
John Schelp is doing his neighborhood hike on Sunday; Pat will resend information.
The next meeting will be for both November and December, on December 10th.
The meeting adjourned.
