Join us in the historic Rose of Sharon Cemetery (intersection of Rose of Sharon Rd and Old Rd) where cemetery monument restoration expert Michael Verville will present an <i>Introduction to Cemetery Monument Preservation</i> workshop. This is a hands-on learning event.<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>The program will include a discussion of best practices, proper materials, stone identification, common damages and repairs, and more. Additionally, Verville Preservation staff will demonstrate a variety of monument cleaning, straightening, leveling, and minor repair techniques. Repairs may include resetting unbroken headstones and footstones, reattaching unbroken headstones to bases, or other appropriate repairs. Workshop will last approximately 3-4 hours. Verville Preservation will provide tools and materials. Preservation Durham tour guides will take small groups around the cemetery pausing here and there to tell stories of murder, mayhem, and misfortune. We will talk about war, disease, dreadful accidents, foul deeds, and falls from great heights. Learn about funerary traditions and grave art and architecture.
