SUBJECT:  Message 10 – Kitchen Table Conversation Set for January 22 and
Choice Period Begins



The start of 2008 brings with it very important activities for Durham Public
Schools.  Today, January 3, marked the start of the Choice Application
period.  Applications are available online at www.dpsnc.net/choice  to
download.  Applications and displays with representatives will be on hand at
the Choice Fair on Saturday, January 26, from 10 am until 2 pm at Hillside
High School.  Small high schools also will be represented at the Fair this
year.  The Choice Fair leads into the start of Showcase of Schools month.
During February, all schools will hold at least two open houses so parents
and others can visit.  Check out the Showcase dates online at
www.dpsnc.net/showcase  Come out and see for yourself what DPS has to offer!



Superintendent Carl Harris and the Board of Education continually seek to
engage stakeholders in a number of meaningful ways.  One key way is through
the Kitchen Table Conversations.



Many of the Board of Education’s discussions revolve around issues that
affect students.  But on Tuesday, January 22, the Board and Superintendent
will have direct discussions with students themselves.  The third of the
Kitchen Table Conversations for 2007-08 is structured to be a conversation
with high school students to learn from them what DPS can do to better
connect with students.  Parents, educators and community members also are
invited to participate.



The discussion will take place at Riverside High School on Tuesday, January
22, from 7 to 8:45 p.m.  Participants will learn about high school reform
efforts that are under way to better develop relationships with students.
They also will have the chance to brainstorm ideas regarding the challenges
of connecting with students.



Facilitators will be on hand to help in our discussion.  Refreshments will
be provided.
