City of Durham Expands Hazardous Household Waste Center Hours

Center Begins Expanded Days and Hours of Service Effective January 15

Durham, N.C. - It's now even more convenient than ever for Durham
residents to properly dispose of hazardous household waste thanks to
expanded service days and hours beginning next week at the City of
Durham's Hazardous Household Waste (HHW) Center.

Effective Tuesday, January 15, the City's HHW Center will begin
operating under a new schedule in which expanded service is now offered
on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 12 p.m. until 6 p.m., Thursdays and
Fridays from 9:30 a.m. until 3 p.m., and Saturdays from 7:30 a.m. until
3 p.m. Prior to the new schedule, the center was only open on Saturdays
from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.

According to Josephine Valencia, waste disposal manager for the City's
Department of Solid Waste Management, the new schedule is in response to
requests by residents for expanded service. "These additional hours
will make it more convenient than ever for our residents to dispose of
hazardous waste, which ultimately helps to protect Durham's
environment," Valencia said.

Some of the many items accepted at the HHW Center include acids/bases,
batteries, drain openers, dry chemical fire extinguishers, florescent
light bulbs, household cleaners and polishes, furniture strippers,
lighter fluids, fuel oils, kerosene, paints/lacquers,
pesticides/herbicides/poisons, mercury thermometers and propane tanks.
The center does not accept medical waste or smoke detectors.

The City's HHW Center is located at 1900 East Club Boulevard, across
from the City's North Durham Water Reclamation Facility. For more
information about the center, visit the City's Web site at
www.durhamnc.gov/departments/solid/hazardous_waste.cfm or contact Durham
