City of Durham Celebrates Arbor Day March 20

Special Tree Planting with 150 Local School Children Along with
Discounted Rain Barrel Sale and Book Raffle

Durham, N.C. - On Thursday, March 20, 2008, the City of Durham will
celebrate Arbor Day with a special tree planting event that begins at 10
a.m. in Trinity Park, located at the corner of West Trinity Avenue and
Watts Street, Durham.

As part of the planting event, sponsored by Bartlett Tree Experts using
trees donated by the Trinity Park Neighborhood Association,
approximately 150 local school children from nearby Watts Elementary
School will work with the City's Urban Forestry Division of the
Department of General Services to plant two oak trees inside the park.
Bartlett Tree Experts will also demonstrate Air-Spade*, a tool that uses
high-pressure air to remove soil from around tree roots to prevent root
damage.

Because of current City water restrictions, the trees will be watered
using collected rainwater in "gator bags," that provide constant, slow
water release to the root of the tree, so that no water is wasted or
lost to evaporation.

In addition to the tree planting event, a rain barrel manufacturer will
be on site with discounted rain barrels for sale. Each customer that
buys a rain barrel will receive a free tree sapling, courtesy of the
City's Urban Forestry Division and Keep Durham Beautiful, Inc. (KDB).
KDB will also sponsor a raffle drawing for copies of Shel Silverstein's
The Giving Tree.

The City's Urban Forestry Division will also perform a tree climbing
demonstration, using specialized ropes and a harness, and will also have
on display an aerial lift truck that is used when performing tree
maintenance tasks.

All Durham residents and the media are invited to attend the event.
