County Helps to Preserve Open Space and Celebrates Community Character

Durham, N.C. – This evening, Durham County Government will celebrate and
commemorate the creation of the New Hope Preserve.  The
multijurisdictional effort involving the City of Durham, Orange County
Government, and the Town of Chapel Hill, was initiated in 2004 to protect
the woodlands and streams in the New Hope Corridor.  The celebration will
begin at 5:00p.m., in the Durham County Commissioners’ Chambers, 200 East
Main Street, Durham, NC 27701.  A reception will follow all comments and
awards.

Led by Durham County, the partnership to preserve open land and community
character of New Hope also involves the Triangle Land Conservancy (TLC),
Erwin Area Neighborhood Group (EANG), Duke University, and Wade and
Carolyn Penny.  Durham County has contributed funding over three years
toward the joint acquisition of the 44-acre tract owned by Duke University
and located in both Durham and Orange counties.  Tonight, Durham County
will present a check for one million dollars to Duke University for final
payment on the proposal.

In conjunction with the participation in the joint acquisition of the
44-acre tract, Orange County has worked with TLC to secure 25 acres of
land owned by Wade and Carolyn Penny adjacent to New Hope Creek in Orange
County.  The citizens of EANG have raised monies toward the project to
heighten awareness and funding potential for the project.

County Manager’s Office, at 919-560-0008.
