The 39th Annual Bimbé Festival features activities all week long!

 

Bimbé Art Beat

The Bimbé Art Beat is a free self-guided visual art tour featuring contemporary artists whose

work reflects a myriad of dimensions of African and African-American life, history and culture.

For a complete listing of hours, artists and venues, pick up a copy of the Bimbé Art Beat map

at Blue Coffee Café (202 Corcoran St.), the Durham Arts Council (120 Morris St.), Durham

Parks and Recreation main office (400 Cleveland St.) or the Hayti Heritage Center (804 Old

Fayetteville St.).

 

TUESDAY MAY 13, 2008

Lunchtime Percussion Jam on the CCB Plaza (201 Corcoran St.)

Featuring Teli Shabu and the Djembe Project

Black Wall Street Banner Project

CCB Plaza (201 Corcoran St.)

A public art and historical exhibit at the CCB Plaza that will be presented by the Parrish Street

Advocacy Group.

DJ Piddipat's African Diaspora Dance Party

An evening on the CCB Plaza with the musical sounds of the African Diaspora. Sponsored by

The Durham Skywriter.

Lunchtime Presentation for Mature Adults

Lunch and Learn - "Public Art in Durham: A Panel Discussion"

A documentary by Kenny Dalsheimer that follows children from Durham Parks and Recreation

Club Boulevard Community Center and artist Rachel Galper as they create artwork for their

own Hero Books.

Third Friday on CCB Plaza presents BimbéYouth Dance (201 Corcoran St.)

Sponsored by Durham Parks and Recreation

Local youth dance companies such as Eclipse Productions, Collage Dance Company and the

Southern High School Dance Program will showcase different dance styles and teach

participants some of the latest new dance moves. DJ Yammy will spin some fresh and old

school dance beats to get everyone involved.

ATTEND BIMBE THIS WEEKEND!

 

On Saturday and Sunday, May 17-18, the Durham Parks and Recreation Department will host the 39th Bimbé Cultural Arts Festival at the Durham Athletic Park. The theme of this year's celebration is "It's a Family Reunion." The Festival will take place on at the Durham Athletic Park on Saturday from 1 pm to 10 pm and will feature and eclectic mix of music and dance celebrating African American traditions. There will also be a Bimbe Market place for visual artist exhibits and many other vendors. On Sunday the festival will continue from 1 pm - 6 pm with a host of jazz and gospel performances.
