If you're interested in Durham history and culture, you won't want to
miss this upcoming Durham County Library panel discussion, The History
of Religion in Durham, Sun., Sept. 14, 3:00, Main Library auditorium.
The discussion will be moderated by journalist and historian Jim Wise.



Panelists are



R. Kelly Bryant, a historian of Durham's black community, whose
great-grandmother founded historic White Rock Baptist Church,



Charles Cooper, retired Herald-Sun photographer, who shot compelling
photographs of a religious sect that incorporated snake-handling into
their worship,



Rev. Joe Harvard, minister of downtown's First Presbyterian Church for
27 years, who knows the local religious community inside out and has a
long tradition of working across religious, economic, and racial lines,



Len Rogoff, research historian at the Jewish Heritage Foundation of
North Carolina and editor of the Rambler, the newsletter of the Southern
Jewish Historical Society, who wrote Homelands:  Southern Jewish
Identity in Durham and Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and



Yonat Shimron, who has covered the News & Observer's religion beat since
1996 and is a six-time recipient of Duke Divinity School's award for
excellence in religion reporting.





This is a fascinating program in a fascinating series.  Hope to see you
