A Look At What's Going On Inside Durham's City Hall

New Episode Begins Airing Monday, September 8 on Time Warner Cable
Channel 8

 

Durham, N.C. - The following highlights from the September 2, 2008
Durham City Council meeting and other topics of interest will be
featured in the upcoming episode of "City Hall This Week."  The show
will begin airing on Monday, September 8 at 1:30 p.m. 

 

Design-Build Agreement Approved for Durham Skateboard Park

*         The City Council approved a $371,600 design-build agreement
for the Durham Skateboard Park with the joint venture team of Lumina
Builders, Inc. and Pillar Design Studios.  The park will be located
within Durham Central Park and will cover an approximately
10,000-to-12,000 square foot area. The Durham skateboarding community
will continue to have input in the design of the park throughout the
design process.  Henri Prosperi, senior project administrator with the
City's General Services Department, describes the overall vision for the
skateboard park and why it is important to have the same team both
design and build the facility on the upcoming episode of "City Hall This
Week."

 

Next Phase of Proposed Improvements to Development Review Process
Unveiled

*         The next phase of proposed improvements to the City's
Development Review Process is moving forward.  City Council members
received an update on the project and were asked to consider a change in
procedure for land use cases requiring a traffic impact analysis.  The
Council referred the matter to the Joint City-County Planning Committee
for specific recommendations as to how the proposed change in procedure
should be carried out. Deputy City Manager Ted Voorhees explains what
the proposed change is and who it would affect on the upcoming episode
of "City Hall This Week."

 

Asset Forfeiture Funds to be Used for Police Training and Equipment 

*         The City Council authorized the use of $727,000 in asset
forfeiture funds for the Durham Police Department to purchase training
and equipment to enable officers to work more efficiently and
effectively.  Included among the upgrades are improving the department's
in-car video program, purchasing voice stress analysis equipment, and
evaluating and reviewing the effectiveness of the canine unit. 

 

Other interviews featured on upcoming episode of "City Hall This Week":

*         Chris Dickey, economic development administrator with the
City's Office of Economic and Workforce Development - Explains how the
public can continue to be involved in the design process of the
Streetscape Project for five of the City's commercial corridors.

 

*         Beverly B. Thompson, director of the City's Office of Public
Affairs - Explains what the new City of Durham Speakers Bureau is and
how it can benefit all residents.

 

*         Dean Pricer, energy manager with the City's General Services
Department - Explains how the installation of the City's first solar
water heating system will be more environmentally friendly while saving
taxpayer money. 

 

"City Hall This Week" is a news program dedicated to informing Durham
residents about what is going on inside Durham's City Hall.  Each
edition is taped on the first and third Tuesday of the month - the day
after City Council meetings.  It airs twice a day on Time Warner Cable
channel 8 through the week of the next City Council meeting.  For more
