Durham Debuts New Speakers Bureau

Bureau Encourages Citizen Groups to Interact Directly with Staff for Information on Their City Government

Durham, N.C. – Durham residents who want to know more about what the City of Durham does for its citizens, beyond what they read in the news, now have their chance thanks to a new speakers bureau.

“Durham – Beyond the Headlines” is the City of Durham’s Speakers Bureau that focuses on topics that take residents behind the headlines to give more information on events, services, and programs that affect their life everyday – from recreational needs, to public safety, to ensuring that the city’s drinking water is plentiful and safe.

According to Durham City Councilman J. Michael Woodard, the new bureau will help provide Durham residents with the information they can use to get the most out of their quality of life. “So much of what you read or see in the news is negative  and at times inaccurate  about this community. This new bureau will enable our citizen groups to go beyond the headlines and learn information firsthand about what’s going on and what role they can directly play in making our community better.” Woodard said. “Plus, City employees are an excellent resource for organizations, and are capable of providing answers to important questions about our services and our community.”

According to Beverly B. Thompson, director of the City’s Office of Public Affairs, the bureau was created to help support the presentation needs of various organizations throughout the city. “This program features a collection of qualified professionals whose backgrounds, skills, and talents serve as a primary foundation supporting the City’s dedication to outstanding service,” Thompson said. “We’ve heard from our citizens that this service is wanted and we hope our community groups take advantage of the opportunity to invite us to their meetings.”

According to Thompson, the bureau is now available to provide speakers for organizational events. If there’s not a topic listed that an organization wishes to learn more about, these groups are urged to contact the City’s Office of Public Affairs about what they would like to know and the City will look into preparing a custom presentation accordingly.

Interested organizations can visit the City’s Web site at www.durhamnc.gov/departments/public/speakers_bureau.cfm and select the presentation their group would like to receive. Interested organizations may also call (919) 560-4123 or complete and mail the form provided in the brochure to schedule a presentation.
