My preference is for things to be reused instead of being thrown out. I am
familiar with and/or have heard good things from people I respect about
Genesis Home, Housing for New Hope, Durham Community Land Trustees, Urban
Ministers of Durham, Durham Interfaith Hospitality Network and TROSA. Note
this list was last updated in January.

Donating Unwanted Items (including furniture and appliances) and Stores that
Resell Items as Fundraisers for Non-profit Organizations
 
This list gives a brief description of non-profit groups¹ purposes that
accept used things and new basic necessities (including their high priority
needs.) It may be possible to receive a tax deduction for your in-kind
donations. 

Durham Animal Protective Society (APS) 560-0640
2117 E. Club Blvd. 
APS is dedicated to protecting and providing shelter for all animals.
Educates the public about the humane care and treatment of animals, promote
spay/neuter and encourage the adoption of homeless animals.
Desires: bedding, old towels, blankets, leashes, collars, crates/carriers,
cleaning supplies, pet food, flea/tick preventatives (Frontline or
Advantage) and toys.

Durham Community Land Trustees  (DCLT)  490-0063

Affordable housing and neighborhood-friendly economic development. DCLT¹s
current projects mostly consist of new constructions built under a green
building initiative. The Land Trust¹s property portfolio includes
homeownership, special needs rental housing, tax-credit rental housing, and
commercial properties. DCLT¹s primary target area is Durham¹s West End,
Burch Avenue and Lyon Park neighborhoods.

Durham Interfaith Hospitality Network 682-2846

Homeless shelter for families. Durham Interfaith Hospitality Network
addresses the needs of homeless families by mobilizing churches, synagogues,
and people of faith to help families move toward residential stability.
Desires:  laundry detergent, diapers, small kitchen utensils, household
items and paper products.

The Friends of Durham County Library provides volunteer and financial
support for library programs, services and equipment for Durham County
libraries. Friends collects books, audio books, CDs and videos year round
for its book sales that are held three times a year.

Genesis Home works to end homelessness for families with children, and for
young people, by providing shelter and teaching the life skills that foster
independence. Since 1989, the agency has provided a safe, stable place where
families can come together, rebuild their lives, and prepare for permanent
housing in the community.
Desires:  household cleaning items, linens, personal hygiene items, kitchen
utensils, cookware, larger appliances, mattresses, furniture, and
educational games and toys. NO clothing. Gift cards to Kroger and Target
Call first to be sure they can use what you would like to donate and are
available to receive drop offs.  As of October 2007 the group had enough
books.

Provides an environment for people to improve quality of their lives through
employment and learning opportunities with a focus on people with
disabilities. Donations to the Foundation are value priced and made
available for sale at the stores which are operated by Goodwill Industries
of Eastern North Carolina, Inc.

Habitat for Humanity International is a Christian organization and welcomes
volunteers from all faiths who are committed to Habitat's goal of
eliminating poverty housing.  A thrift store benefiting Habitat for Humanity
in Durham and Orange counties.
The thrift store sells gently used furniture, appliances that are in working
order and household goods.  Pick up service available.

Housing for New Hope works to prevent and end homelessness ONE VALUABLE
PERSON AT A TIME.  Housing for New Hope encourage and assist homeless people
and other persons in crisis to move toward lives marked by increased levels
of stability, dignity, hope, and independence. Housing for New Hope provides
a unique continuum of care for the most needy of Durham's citizens through
outreach and crisis assistance, transitional housing, and permanent housing..
Desires: blankets, clothes (especially underclothes, lingerie, extra large
thermal wear, gowns,) towels, washing detergent, toiletries, clothes hampers
and sometimes mattresses. Call first to be sure they can use what you would

The mission of the John Avery Boys & Girls Club is to enable all young
people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as
productive, responsible and caring citizens. The club is a membership
organization. Fees are kept low to allow all youth to participate. Annual
membership dues are $10.00 per youth.

The goal of Freecycle is to build a gifting/recycling movement that reduces
waste, saves precious resources and eases the burden on our landfills, while
enabling our members to benefit from the strength of the greater community.

special item rather than throw it away. Whether you're looking to discard or
acquire an item, Freecycle(tm)Durham NC is the way to do it, as long as it's
FREE --- No selling, bartering, trading or borrowing.  No posts for money,
tickets, coupons, firearms, alcohol, adult materials or medications (Rx or
over the counter). The understanding is that the taker will pick up.

program located in Durham. TROSA's mission is to assist in changing lives
and increasing law-abiding behavior by providing a self-supporting,
two-year, residential, self-help community serving offenders and substance
abusers at no cost to the individuals.

heal, find hope and begin to rebuild their lives.
