Get Street Repaving Information on New “Operation Green Light” Web Site

Student Wins $50 Prize for Naming Mascot and Special Recognition at Tonight’s City Council Meeting

Durham, N.C. – Durham residents looking for up-to-date information on the City of Durham’s street repaving progress now need look no further than the new “Operation Green Light” Web site.

Effective immediately, www.DurhamOperationGreenlight.org, is now live to inform Durham taxpayers about how the City is working to improve the ride on Durham’s streets. Residents can simply go to the Web site and enter any street name to find out where it fits into the street maintenance schedule.

After finding their street, a click of the mouse takes the viewer to a road map that shows other nearby streets. The site also contains other useful information, including a list of all streets in the city and how they rank, funding sources for particular streets, street repaving progress reports, and finally a place to test your "street" knowledge of Durham.

“This website contains a lot of useful information for residents who simply want to know how their street ranks, or how it fits into the City’s repaving schedule,” said Mayor William V. “Bill” Bell. “Also, because the site shows funding information, residents can see how bond dollars are being used to improve city streets.”

In addition, the City will announce the name of its “Operation Green Light” mascot at tonight’s City Council meeting. De’Mar Glasper, a fifth- grade student at Burton IB Elementary School, will be recognized by Mayor Bell for his winning submission of “The Pavenator.” Glasper will receive a $50 shopping spree, courtesy of Northgate Merchants. Earlier this month, Mayor Bell requested the principals of each elementary school in Durham County to give their students the opportunity to participate in a naming contest for the new mascot. More than 30 names were submitted to the contest, with Glasper’s entry of “The Pavenator” being selected by Public Works employees for its creativity and for Glasper’s realistic job description for the mascot  “He paves the streets,” he said.
