INC NEWS - flashing bill boards are a bad idea...

I don't know if citizens in Burlington were afforded the opportunity to
weigh in or not. Some areas already have language in their laws that allow these,
so don't require a vote.
Durham is fortunate, because we can discuss this, and our opinions will
count. More importantly we can probably effect the proposal before it's even laid
on the table.
There's no rush to come to any conclusions, let's get all the facts and take
our time so we can decide intelligently.

I'm inclined to agree with John on this one. On the other hand--the
billboards couldn't be any worse than the lighting at the new Toyota dealership out
on 15-501--and look how well the city stayed on top of that one . . . . Maybe
we could have a sample billboard installed near, say, the new performing arts
center, just to see how they'll enhance our skylines.

The electronic bill boards I've seen elsewhere dominate the night horizon and
flash new ad images every 4-5 seconds. They exist.
And we don't need them in Durham, next to our neighborhoods.
One must assume that the whole INC will vote on this; not just the executive
committee. Is that correct?
Again, I feel that the INC should oppose this measure. More background can be
found here...

I believe that neighborhoods should be able to hear what is
being proposed before passing judgment or proposing that any
organization strongly oppose it.
THAT IS WHY INC HAS THEM AS A SPEAKER.
Basing a decision (any decision) should be based on facts
and looking at both sides of an issue, not prejudicing it.
For instance, the subject line in the previous email
posting 'suggests' that these billboards will be
flashing bill boards.
That is a falsehood, and that is a fact!
I encourage everyone and anyone who believes that decisions
should be based on objective information and factual data to
attend the next session of INC to decide for themselves,
instead of depending on someone else's opinion which may
be misleading or misinformed.

folks,
Today's Bull City Rising has an entry on the
proposal to introduce electronic bill boards in Durham...

I've seen these electronic boards in the Triad and
near Richmond. They look like large flat screen TVs on a
stick -- that flash different images every five seconds.
Not only do the bill boards represent a distraction on
the Interstate in a congested urban setting, many of these
bill boards stand near homes and residential neighborhoods
along the Interstate.
I'm surprised this is even being considered by
local officials. The INC needs to strongly oppose this move
by the bill board industry.
