Facts: Durham County Cooperative Extension will host a "Poverty Simulation," allowing participants to walk in the shoes of a typical low-income family. Participants experience the day-to-day realities of a struggling family, a single parent, a senior citizen and a youth living in poverty in America. The goal of the simulation is to sensitize and create empathy, compassion and an appreciation of the struggles, strength and courage it takes to survive and succeed in a world of poverty. "This poverty simulation focuses on all the aspects of living in a world of poverty, not just a lack of financial resources," said Delphine Sellars, director of the Durham County Cooperative Extension. "It serves not only to increase our compassion and understanding but can guide us as we advocate for an improved quality of life for others." The research based "Poverty Simulation" will be facilitated by Sellars and Robin Roper, extension associate, for the Department of 4-H Youth Development and Family and Consumer Science at NC State University, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. After the simulation, the facilitators will lead the participants in a group discussion about their experiences and perspectives during the "Poverty Simulation." Participation is limited to the first 75 adults that register for the event. Participants must be 16 years old and older. A continental breakfast will be served prior to the beginning of the simulation. To participate in the simulation, download and copy of the application on the Durham County Cooperative Extension website at http://durham.ces.ncsu.edu/. Completed applications must be submitted to Sellars at dsellars at durhamcountync.gov. For more information, call 919-560-0524 or email dsellars at durhamcountync.gov.
