County Continues to Make Progress in its Strategic Planning Process

October 24, 2011

Durham, NC - Durham County's Strategic Planning Process will continue to harness citizen input with upcoming Town Hall Forums designed to gather feedback on early parts of the plan. The Strategic Plan, slated to be adopted by the Board of County Commissioners in February, will help shape the County's priorities with clear goals, objectives and initiatives. Since the beginning of the Strategic Planning Process, Durham County Government has been incorporating public comment and needs citizen involvement now more than ever.
The upcoming Town Hall Forums are an excellent way for citizens to receive updates on the Strategic Planning Process and to voice their opinions about the Strategic Plan. Town Hall Forums will be held on:Monday, Nov. 7 7 p.m.-9 p.m. NORTH FORUM at Northern High School auditorium, 110 Tom Wilkinson Road Thursday, Nov. 10 1 p.m.-3 p.m.DOWNTOWN FORUM at Durham Convention Center, 301W. Using the information we collected, we've drafted some early goals for the County and we are looking forward to sharing these at the November Town Hall forums," said County Manager Mike Ruffin. "We urge citizens to stay excited about this process and turn out to these forums to provide feedback on the early parts of the plan." Other highlights from the Strategic Planning Process include: An organizational analysis report from this summer's information-gathering phase of the Strategic Planning Process is now available. The report summarizes the main themes that emerged from almost 1,700 citizen surveys, more than 950 employee surveys, almost 30 interviews and eight focus groups. The document also reveals key short-term and long-term issue areas that citizens want to see addressed in the Strategic Plan. The report is available on the Strategic Planning Web site at http://durhamcountync.gov/departments/bocc/Strategic_Plan/contrib.html. Michael Palmer, who recently served as interim deputy county manager and acting county manager, will remain involved with the Strategic Planning Process as a consultant. Palmer joins Zelos, Inc. and Dr. Tyrone Baines as consultants on this initiative. Lastly, County staff and consultants are in the process of actively engaging local youth in focus groups to better gauge their feedback on goals and priorities for the community. For more information about the Strategic Planning Process visit, http://durhamcountync.gov/departments/bocc/Strategic_Plan/contrib.html Questions about these upcoming Town Hall Forums or the Strategic Planning Process should be directed to Michael Davis, assistant to the county manager for Durham County Government, at 919-560-0000 or email mdavis at durhamcountync.gov. About the Strategic Planning ProcessIn late 2010, the Durham Board of County Commissioners (BOCC)began working with local consultant Dr. Tyrone Baines to establish plans for the future of Durham County. While planning, the BOCC molded a new mission and vision for the County and agreed that the adoption of a Strategic Plan for the organization is necessary to optimize Durham County Government services for our residents. Durham County Government has hired Zelos, Inc. of Midlothian, VA to guide the methodology and timeline of the Strategic Planning Process. Michael Palmer, former interim deputy county manager, also is serving as a consultant on this initiative. ###
