[Durham INC] 15/501 Diet

I'm the type of person who likes to get efficiently from Point A to B so removing my opportunity to pass the slow pokes along any stretch of road gives me pause. If there's an extra lane I view it as a faster highway and an invitation to get along my journey more quickly.

However, in this part of town I actually think making the road less car focused would greatly benefit the area and cause more people to frequent those businesses. I mean just look at Refractory Cafe. They have such an inviting front porch but who wants to sit there with multiple lanes of cars whizzing by? I have long loved many businesses along that stretch but actually hate driving there because it's so ugly of a road and such a stark contrast from surrounding beautiful roads like University, 751, and Chapel Hill Rd.

I will definitely regret this opinion when I'm driving impatiently behind someone slow but I do think the greater good will be served by making it less freeway looking. Perhaps it could get some trees in the future too.

I don't know what alternative reality this guy lives in, but I usually see more traffic on West Club than I see on this part of Business 15-501. http://www.heraldsun.com/opinion/letters/x219732101/Letters-to-the-Editor-June-1

There is nothing desirable about that corridor, from a commuting standpoint. It’s a raceway, and way under capacity. With limited public funds, this is likely the only opportunity for the foreseeable future to make a positive difference there. Don’t know why businesses think that they will suffer. If it’s more attractive to more people because of these improvements, I could see business getting better. Ask Geer St Garden, the Pit, or Torero’s Pizza how their business survives without a 4 lane highway in front of it.
