Durham Recognized in Top 50 for Green Vehicle Fleets

Only North Carolina City to Make the List



DURHAM, N.C. - The City of Durham has once again received recognition for its efforts to have one of the greenest government vehicle fleets in North America.



The City's Fleet Management Department<http://durhamnc.gov/1375/Fleet-Management> was awarded 45th place in Government Green Fleet(tm) Awards<http://the100best.com/gf_winners_2015.htm> from Green Fleet Magazine<http://www.greenfleetmagazine.com/>, Green Fleet Conference organizers, and The 100 Best Fleets in North America. The City of Durham is the only city in North Carolina to make the Top 50 list. The Government Green Fleet Award is open to the more than 38,000 federal, state, and local government fleets in North America.



The Government Green Fleet(tm) Award is a comprehensive set of criteria specifically tailored around the challenges and requirements of the government fleet manager. The award is given based on several key evaluation categories including fuels and emissions, policy and planning, fleet composition, fleet utilization, education, executive and employee involvement, and supporting programs.



According to Director Joe Clark with the City's Fleet Management Department, the award distinguishes the City's fleet as one of the greenest and most efficient in the nation. "With thousands of public fleets in North America, being ranked the 45th best fleet is a tremendous honor," Clark said. "Our department endeavors to improve upon economic, environmental, and social performance. We recognize the importance of our role in reducing our carbon footprint and protecting our environment while saving public resources."



This is the third award the City's Fleet Management Department has received this year. In April 2015, the department was recognized as the 17th Best Fleet in the North America by the "100 Best Fleets<http://www.the100bestfleets.com/100_winners_2015.htm>" award and Governing<http://www.governing.com/> magazine, and as a Notable Fleet by the "Leading Fleets<http://www.government-fleet.com/news/story/2015/04/announcing-the-2015-leading-fleets.aspx>" award and Government Fleet<http://www.government-fleet.com/> magazine for 2015.



About the Fleet Management Department

The City of Durham Fleet Management Department<http://durhamnc.gov/1375/Fleet-Management> is responsible for all services related to the City's vehicles and equipment. The goal of the department is to procure safe, dependable, cost-effective equipment, and furnish quality maintenance services to all City departments. Fleet Management consists of two divisions: Fleet Maintenance and Fire Maintenance. The department is also a member of the Triangle Clean Cities Coalition<http://www.trianglecleancities.org/>. Guided by the City's Strategic Plan<http://durhamnc.gov/183/Strategic-Plan>, the department enables all City departments that use vehicles and equipment to provide excellent service to the residents of Durham.
