Downtown Parking Garage Community Visioning Session January 25

What: New Downtown Durham Parking Garage Community Visioning Session

Who: City of Durham General Services and Transportation Departments and the Durham City-County Planning Department

When: Wednesday, January 25, 2017, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Where: Durham Armory
220 Foster Street
Durham, N.C. 27701

Fast Facts:
· Construction of a new downtown parking garage is set to begin later this year and the City of Durham wants resident and stakeholder input now as it begins the design process.

· The $23 million project, to be located on a 1.2 acre site bounded by Rigsbee Avenue, West Morgan Street and North Mangum Street, will be a mixed-use parking deck with approximately 750-800 parking spaces. The garage will also contain 15,000-20,000 square feet of commercial/retail space and 5,000 square feet for a centralized parking office. The project is anticipated to be under construction in fall 2017, with a completion date in late 2018.

· As the City’s General Services Department prepares to begin the design process, staff is seeking community input, thoughts, and ideas for the project and site. The discussion at the community visioning session will include topics such as:
o Architectural expression − “gateway” into downtown
o Activation along Morgan Street
o Pedestrian experience
o Site and neighborhood
o Landscape
o Future retail and development
o Connectivity to downtown
o Security of the facility
o Parking
o Site history

· The new garage is necessary due to an unprecedented demand for parking in City-owned public parking facilities. The City’s off-street parking garages (Chapel Hill Street Garage, Church Street Garage, Corcoran Street Garage, and the Durham Centre Garage) are at capacity for monthly permit holders. As a result, the City is not able to accommodate requests for monthly parking permits from individuals or businesses.

· For residents and stakeholders unable to attend the community visioning session, updates throughout the course of the project will be available on the City’s project Web page<http://durhamnc.gov/761/New-Downtown-Parking-Garage>.

· Any person with a disability may receive an auxiliary aid or service to effectively participate in this session by contacting the City’s ADA Coordinator at (919) 560-4197 or by email<mailto:ADA at DurhamNC.gov> no later than 48 hours before the meeting.

· Questions may also be directed to General Services Project Management Team Leader and Project Manager Henri Prosperi<mailto:henri.prosperi at durhamnc.gov> at (919) 560-4197, ext. 21253.
