DURHAM, N.C. - Residents interested in discovering and protecting Durham's local waterways should mark their calendars now to celebrate the ninth annual Creek Week<http://www.durhamcreekweek.org/> later this month.

Creek Week<http://www.durhamcreekweek.org/>, set for March 18-25, offers indoor and outdoor activities to help people of all ages and abilities learn more about creeks, rivers, and lakes and how to keep them healthy. During this week-long event, residents have a chance to join litter cleanups, tour a water reclamation facility, go on a canoe adventure, learn from master naturalists, and enjoy family fun.

New for this year, the Third Friday Arts Initiative on March 17 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. will help kick off the week's events with water-related art installations, open studios, and interactive pop-ups at Pleiades Gallery, Golden Belt, The Makery, and Duke Center for Documentary Studies.

"Creek Week partners with over 20 organizations interested in clean water," said Laura Webb Smith, public education coordinator for the Stormwater and GIS Services Division of the City of Durham Public Works Department<http://durhamnc.gov/692/Stormwater-GIS-Services>. "Educators, artists, neighborhood organizers, water professionals, and outdoor enthusiasts lead experiences that help us explore our connections to local waterways."

To learn more about this community effort to provide opportunities for residents to discover and explore local streams, and to do their part to protect water resources, visit the Creek Week website<http://www.durhamcreekweek.org/> or contact Smith at (919) 560-4326, ext. 30235 or by email<mailto:Laura.Smith at DurhamNC.gov>.
