2017 Golden Leaf Award Winners Honored
Community Awards Recognize Best Contributions to Durham's Appearance

DURHAM, N.C. - Last night, eight Durham projects were honored for excellence in design and preservation at the 2017 Golden Leaf Awards for Community Appearance<http://www.durhamgoldenleaf.com/>.

The awards program, sponsored by the Durham City-County Appearance Commission, Keep Durham Beautiful, Inc., and the Durham City-County Environmental Affairs Board, honors excellence in design, preservation, and stewardship of the natural and built environment.

This year, 19 entries in seven categories were received in addition to the People's Choice winner. The eight winners honored were:

*        Keep Durham Beautiful: Mount Merrill

*        Adaptive Reuse: Bull City Cool

*        Environmental Affairs Board Sustainable Design: Durham County Human Services Complex

*        Small Development: Bootstrap Advisors

*        Garden & Landscape: Grace Garden

*        Large Development: Counter Culture Coffee Roastery, Headquarters & Training Center

*        Hearth & Home: Campbell Residence Rehabilitation & Addition

*        People's Choice: Durham Parks & Recreation Wrightwood Park Old Restroom Building Improvements

Judging of the Golden Leaf Awards, except the People's Choice Award, was done by an independent panel of local professionals representing architecture, landscape architecture, development, and the arts community. Selection criteria included excellence in design of a new development and/or improvement of an existing structure; raising community awareness of the value of good design and stewardship; improving the character, environment, or livability of an area; and a commitment to ongoing property maintenance in landscaping. The People's Choice Award was selected by public vote from the nominees under consideration for any of the award categories for 2017. With voting open from March 1 to March 17, over 2,700 votes were cast for this award.

The City of Durham<http://durhamnc.gov/1323/City-Council> and Durham County<http://dconc.gov/government/departments-a-e/board-of-commissioners> jointly established the Environmental Affairs Board<http://durhamnc.gov/1368/Environmental-Affairs-Board-EAB> (EAB) in 1991, in recognition of the importance of local cooperation on environmental issues. The EAB is an advisory board of appointed volunteer citizens to provide the City and County with expert and comprehensive advice on various environmental matters.
