Durham Celebrates Drinking Water Week May 7-13
Local Student-Artists Honored for Water Conservation Posters

DURHAM, N.C. - The City of Durham is asking residents to take a moment beginning later this week to recognize the City employees who work each and every day to provide a steady supply of clean and safe drinking water to all who live, work, and play in Durham.

In honor of 2017 National Drinking Water Week, Mayor William V. "Bill" Bell issued a proclamation at the May 1 City Council meeting, declaring May 7-13 Drinking Water Week in Durham. The proclamation acknowledges the contributions of water plant operators, lab technicians, and other water industry professionals for their roles in providing drinking water to our customers.

As part of the City's annual celebration of Drinking Water Week, Mayor Bell and the City Council also recognized nine student-artists from local schools who created winning interpretations in the City's 2017 Water Conservation Poster Contest, coordinated by the Water Management Department's Water Efficiency and Conservation Program.

Winning entries in the grades K-2 division were:

*        First Place - Owen Herbert-Reader (Montessori Community School)

*        Second Place - Eden Amani Livingston (Morehead Montessori Elementary School)

*        Third Place - Isabel Halpern (Morehead Montessori Elementary School)

Winning entries in the grades 3-5 division were:

*        First Place - Beckett Moylan (Durham Academy)

*        Second Place - Merritt Schulz (Durham Academy)

*        Third Place - Aayaz Husain (Durham Academy)

Winning entries in the grades 6-8 division were:

*        First Place - Abigail Cunningham (Voyager Academy)

*        Second Place - Ethan Hubrich (Voyager Academy)

*        Third Place - Jackson Lee (Voyager Academy)

These winning entries went on to represent Durham in a statewide contest sponsored by the North Carolina Chapter of the American Water Works Association/Water Environment Association. Competing with student-artists from across the state, the City is pleased to announce the following student-artists won at the State Level:

State Level K-2 division winners were:

Also of note, artwork by Ama Mensah-Boone from the 2016 Poster Contest was selected by the national American Water Works Association for use in the 2017 national Drinking Water Week campaign. Ms. Mensah-Boone was recognized by Water Management staff for this honor during an assembly at her school, Durham Academy, in early March.
