Durham Kicks Off Tree Planting Season
1,000 New Trees for Bull City Neighborhoods; Volunteer Opportunities Now Available

DURHAM, N.C. - Fall in the Bull City means one thing for the City of Durham's urban forestry team - it's the beginning of the tree planting season<http://bit.ly/2j7Nhvv>.

The City's urban forestry staff, with the help of volunteers, hopes to plant 1,000 trees from over 30 different species selected to be long-lived, low-maintenance, and widely adapted to local conditions. These species provide habitat diversity, are mostly native to North America, and come from North Carolina nurseries.

The plantings will focus on 12 neighborhoods with a lack of tree canopy as identified in the March 2017 Tree Canopy Assessment Report<http://nc-durham.civicplus.com/DocumentCenter/View/17528>. Projects being considered for this planting season are in the neighborhoods of Old East Durham, Albright, Southside/St. Theresa, East Central Durham, Tuscaloosa/Lakewood, Colonial Village, Northgate Park, Burch Avenue, Old West Durham, Central Park, Edgemont, and Walltown.

Since the tree planting season lasts from November 2017 until March 2018, planting dates and locations are still being finalized and will be posted on the Keep Durham Beautiful website<https://keepdurhambeautiful.org/tree-planting> and social media. Starting this month, Keep Durham Beautiful will also begin notifying residents in advance of planting projects taking place in their neighborhood, and residents may identify individual sites for consideration for tree replacement using this online form<https://goo.gl/forms/lQDiBrMVDkwYt3Wi2>.

In addition to these new tree plantings, City staff will also be handling routine operational replacement activities throughout the city where trees have died or must be removed due to old age and safety concerns.

Funding for the purchasing and planting of these 1,000 new trees this year has been provided through partnerships with Duke Energy Foundation<http://www.duke-energy.com/community/duke-energy-foundation>, the Duke Carbon Offsets Initiative<http://sustainability.duke.edu/carbon_offsets/>, and individual donors. Donations toward future tree plantings can also be made to the Keep Durham Beautiful Tree Planting<https://keepdurhambeautiful.org/tree-planting> program.

For more information about tree species selection, residents should contact Urban Forestry Manager Alex Johnson with the City's General Services Department at (919) 560-4197, ext. 21275 or by email<mailto:alexanderjohnson at durhamnc.gov>. For more information about volunteer opportunities, contact Keep Durham Beautiful Executive Director Tania Dautlick at (919) 354-2729 or by email<mailto:Tania at keepdurhambeautiful.org>.
