Happy Friday:
Can you help me interpret this from the Ohio State Board of Pharmacy? Does this mean that the secured items need to be secured until the licensed healthcare professional is on site? Can the Medical Assistant’s unlock these and prep prior to the healthcare professional being in the building?

Thanks,
Janie

Adequate Safeguards to Deter and Detect Theft of Prescription Drugs, Records, and Prescription Pads:

 A Pharmacist, Prescriber and Responsible Person, must maintain supervision and control over all prescription drugs at the licensed location in order to detect and deter theft or diversion. This can be accomplished with a physical or electronic security, suitable locks, and/or an electronic barrier. The following items shall be secured:

o all dangerous drugs;
o records of drug administered, dispensed and used;
o poisons;
o prescription pads;
o exempt narcotics;
o and hypodermics.

All areas securing the above listed items shall be secured by a key or other effective mechanism to prevent access of unauthorized personnel when a licensed healthcare professional is not on site; including or not limited to unlicensed office staff and maintenance personnel.
