Subject: [dukepark] Council approves $300k pedestrian study

DURHAM -- The City Council approved Monday paying $313,000 for a consultant to help the city become more pedestrian-friendly.

Louis Berger Group Inc. of Cary will conduct an inventory of existing pedestrian facilities, recommend additional programs for pedestrians, and improvements such as curb ramps for the disabled. The pedestrian planning project is a first for the city and will be financed by a state grant and city public works money.

My initial reaction is that $313k could by itself pay for a lot of pedestrian improvements. So i think there is a lot of pressure on the city and its consultants to make sure that this money is spent wisely.

If however, the consultants do their work properly, and the city ends up with a complete inventory of pedestrian safety problems, and a plan to
improve pedestrian safety throughout the entire city, without pitting one neighborhood against another in a quest for scarce pedestrian safety project funding, then this could be money well spent. DPNA, and the various multi-neighborhood groups with whom we are working on pedestrian safety initiatives, will be keeping a watch on how well our consultants are performing.
