Dear INCer's

FYI : Forwarded from* *"Erwin Area Neighborhood Group"

*Land for the New Hope Creek Corridor*

Most of the money for this project will eventually come from grant and
other money external to the respective city and county funds.

However, we need the city and county support now to get the land
preserved NOW, so the external funds can be raised over the next three
years or so.

More importantly, this will also leverage the acquisition of ever more
critical New Hope Creek Corridor property that has not been able to be
conserved for the last 15 years. Once land has been sold and
developed, it is nearly impossible to purchase it at an affordable
cost. This is why I have supported the New Hope Corridor Commission and
the Triangle Land Conservancy in these efforts over the last 13 years.

This is a major reason, although not directly adjacent to the land being
purchased, forward-looking Chapel Hill supported this cause by
designating $100,000 toward this project. Durham city and county
governments need to do the same.

Dear Neighbors,

Critical meeting on *Thursday, March 24 *- *Durham City Council work
session* at *1pm*. Our item may not come up until 4pm- I will confirm
time. Please send *email* before then- info below.

Please come to this meeting if you can. It is important that we have as
many supporters as possible there. Wear green and we will give you an
Astroturf yard sale pin too!

The future of the intergovernmental purchase of the Duke
tract/protection of Penny land will rest with the decision of the Durham
city council on Thursday. Chapel Hill voted in favor of purchase Monday
night (YEAH!). Orange County is waiting to follow Durham city's lead.

Chapel Hill pledged $100,000 toward the purchase. Durham City is being
asked to do the same- $33,000 per year for 3 years . We do not think
this is too much to ask...especially since we citizens have raised
*$100,000 *is just 2 months!!! ( Yes, we have passed the mark...working
to that $150,000 goal now!)

*Please call or email Durham city council members*: /Ask them to support
the public purchase of the Duke tract and accept the incredible Penny
family offer to protect their New Hope Creek lands. (The Penny offer is
contingent on the public purchase of the Duke land.)

Remind them that this is a win win situation for all - further
protection of New Hope Creek, acquisition of another piece of the
Corridor, and a step toward creation of New Hope Creek Park- a place for
people to get out, walk, exercise, enjoy the beauty and solitude of
nature, and escape from the stresses of city life.

More info to come about time of meeting on Thursday...

Resolution passed by Chapel Hill Town Council printed below***

Please pass this message on to friends and neighbors!!!

Thanks as always for your amazing support-
