23rd in Downtown Durham

Stream Clean-Ups and Arbor Day Ceremony to Precede
Festival Opening

Durham, NC – The annual Durham Earth Day Festival, the
Triangle’s largest Earth Day celebration, will be held
Saturday, April 23, 2005, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on
Corcoran and Parrish Streets in downtown Durham.

Children and adults will enjoy the festival’s
environmental education venue featuring the Scrap
Exchange, the Schoolhouse of Wonder, the Museum of
Life and Science, storytelling with Louise Omoto
Kessel, giant puppets, and much more. Festival goers
may also view the latest hybrid vehicle technology and
learn what local groups are doing to protect and
enhance Durham’s environment. This year’s festival
also includes a showerhead exchange, a climbing wall,
rain barrel and compost bin sales, great food, and
more.

In addition, there will be an eclectic mix of music
including folk with Chuck & the WagginEars, reggae
with Mickey Mills & Steel, and Latin with Carnavalito.
Paperhand Puppet Intervention will also perform and
lead a giant puppet parade. This year will also
continue the festival’s tradition with the Procession
of the Species, a parade and celebration of the
environment.

Major sponsors of the event include the City of
Durham, Durham Central Park, The Herald Sun, WTVD ABC
11, Duke Recycles, WDNC 570/620 AM, and the National
Public Radio affiliate WNCU 90.7 FM.

A four-page insert about the 2005 Durham Earth Day
Festival will be included in The Herald-Sun on
Wednesday, April 20, 2005. Admission for the festival
is free and the event will be held rain or shine.

Citizens are also encouraged to participate in one of
four stream clean-ups from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. the
morning of the festival.

Volunteer meeting locations are Walltown Park,
Whippoorwill Park, Third Fork Creek at South Street
and Lakewood Avenue, and the Duke Diet and Fitness
Center at Duke Street and Trinity Avenue. Immediately
following the Third Fork Creek clean-up, volunteers
and neighbors are invited to an Arbor Day Ceremony in
Forest Hills Park. The event will include a
tree-planting ceremony, recognition of the recent
stream restoration, and "Tree Factory," an activity
for children. For more information or to volunteer,
