Dear Friends and Neighbors,

First, please feel free to pass this message on…far and wide.

***

In the continuing effort to build strong grass roots Town-Gown relations we
are launching the Duke Community Dinners this year. This initiative is
aimed at directly connecting new Duke Students with members of the Durham
community. The program is simple and we need your help! You can volunteer
to build town-gown relations and it is just this easy…

When: Week of October 3 – Dinner Time

Who: New Duke Students and members of the local community around campus

What: Members of the Durham Community (that’s you) will open up their homes
to new Duke Students for a home cooked meal.

The Details: Volunteer by Thursday, September 22 to host 2-3 Duke Students
for dinner in your home. We will connect homes with Duke Students and then
provide each of you the other person’s contact information. You will be
responsible for making contact and picking a night of the week and a time
that is convenient for you all to have dinner together. You will need to
pick the students up from campus and bring them back to your home. You can
drive or walk depending on where you live (these students all live on East).
Fix the students a home cooked meal, spend some time getting to know each
other, spend some time in the neighborhood, enjoy yourselves. After you
volunteer, more specific information will follow. Please feel free to
contact me if you have any questions.

How to Volunteer: Send a brief email to HYPERLINK
"mailto:joshparker at nc.rr.com"joshparker at nc.rr.com with your Name, Telephone
#, and Address. If you would like to have more than three students in your
home please let me know the number.

Thanks to those of you who have already volunteered or provided suggestions
for this event. Please consider volunteering for what promises to be a
great time and good for our community. Hopefully, these students will see
just how great and strong our neighborhoods are while increasing our quality
of life. The benefits could be endless. We are focusing this effort on the
neighborhoods around campus, but if you live in any neighborhood in Durham,
we’re glad to have you!

***

While this event is not an official program of the University, the Dean of
Students Office (specifically Ryan Lombardi and Clay Adams) has done a great
deal of work, in planning, to help make this happen!

Warmly.

-josh
