City of Durham Moves to Mandatory Water Conservation Measures

Stage III Goes Into Effect Monday, November 7, 2005

Durham, N.C. - With drought conditions in the piedmont continuing
and no significant rainfall in the forecast, Durham City Manager
Patrick Baker has enacted Stage III Moderate Mandatory Conservation
of the City of Durham's Water Conservation Ordinance, effective
Monday, November 7, 2005.

Residents are encouraged to begin water conservation measures today
and to use the weekend to rethink their overall water usage habits
so they are in full compliance with the Stage III ordinance by
Monday. "It is critical that our customers follow these mandatory
restrictions to ensure that there is an adequate water supply for
all," said Baker. "We need to significantly decrease our daily
water usage and our customers play a vital role in making sure we
achieve this goal."

State climatologists predict little relief in the near future and
streamflows into Durham's two water supply lakes continue to run
below expected flow for this time of year. Although the watersheds
of Lake Michie and Little River Lake have each received 3.51 and
2.51 inches of rain, the area is still experiencing a deficit of
approximately 7.45 inches.
