We are also excited to hear the many talents of singer/songwriter/pianist -
Amy Cross. Originally from South Florida, Amy graduated from the Florida
State University, School of Music, with a BA in Commercial Music and a minor
in Business. Amy's music is a fusion of her classical training and love for
classic rock, pop, and ballad styles. She was nominated for "Best Unsigned
Songwriter" at Florida's Big Time Talent Show. Amy performed around her
college town of Tallahassee, the Florida State University School of Music,
and most recently around her new home of Raleigh/Durham, North Carolina. She
just released a beautiful compilation of 6 new original songs called
"Something More".

Plus, don't miss our featured visual artist Megan Koslofsky. Megan also
displayed her works in our art-room last month. However, she is putting up
other works for us to view. Artist Bio: Megan grew up in Durham and
discovered the love of art without any formal training as a kid, creating
collages and sculptures "from the things around me." She attended the
Pennsylvania College of Art and Design and learned about materials, mediums
and techniques, "adding more tools to my bag of tricks." It was there that
Megan discovered printmaking. "My printmaking teachers were good for me and
taught me as much as they could about the different types of printmaking and
techniques, allowing me to exploit the potentialities of the medium. I
graduated and moved back to Durham the same day. I am enjoying being back in
down South."

Flywheel Design Gallery: Presents - blackBox, whiteSquare - Works by Cici
Stevens. Brief description of Steven's work: "Pairing odd objects collected
along roadways and mounted on a matte black steel box, Cici aims to heighten
the relationship between human ingenuity and the inescapable forces of
nature." Reception is Friday, Nov. 18, 5 to 8 pm, as part of Durham's
Culture Crawl. Artist Statement: "I am drawn to the stuff that gets thrown
away, in particular, tools and parts of machinery that have outlived their
primary function, tossed in scrap yards or discarded along roadways.
Subjected to the forces of nature and disfigured by incessant traffic, the
objects reveal a compelling history in their marred structure. In shiny, new
condition these gadgets indicate the marvel of human ingenuity; in their
flawed and imperfect state one finds evidence of the divine and brutal
nature of the world we inhabit." This exhibit will run through Dec. 13.
Flywheel is open weekdays from 9:30am to 5pm., and is located at 409 E.
Chapel Hill Street, (one block past the Post Office in downtown Durham)
919.683.8164.

West Village Apartments: Presents Photographer Katie Riggan. Riggan's
photographic training, as well as her B.A., comes from UNC-CH's School of
Journalism. She has also taken many classes at the Durham Arts Council over
the past 8 years, and studied at the Studio Art Centers International in
Florence, Italy. While taking a break from the classroom to decide on
future academic direction, she is pursuing personal photography projects
that bring awareness to local social issues.

Katie's current project, documentation of Hoop Dreams Basketball Academy,
began in late May of 2005. The Academy is a non-profit organization that
provides basketball skills instruction and physical fitness training to
children with life threatening illnesses. Located here in Durham, North
Carolina, Hoop Dreams is the only facility in the Triangle area offering
high quality, affordable basketball skill instruction in an environment that
is medically sound and physically safe for the disease-specific needs of
children.

Hoop Dreams currently serves families through referrals from Duke University
Medical Center and UNC Hospital. The number of participants is constrained
due to the limited availability of suitable gym space. The Academy is,
therefore, conducting a capital campaign to raise $2.9 million for the
construction of a full-time gym devoted to the needs of its participants.
Upon completion of the construction project in 2005, Hoop Dreams will be
able to increase the number of families it serves and expand its programs
more fully. Hoop Dreams has received financial support from the Lance
Armstrong Foundation and numerous individuals, as well as in-kind services
from Duke University. West Village is located at 604 W. Morgan St.,
682-3690, www.WestVillageApts.com <http://www.westvillageapts.com/> .

Durham Arts Place: The biggest printmaking show in the area in recent memory
is about to be unveiled at the Transom Gallery. "Southern Inking" brings
together a broad selection of young southern printmakers with fresh and
inventive takes on the art of printmaking. This opening will showcase a
broad range of styles, techniques and content. Artists of national and
regional renown, as well as emerging artists will be represented.

This show is unprecedented in bringing together such an extraordinary group
of printmaking talent to Durham. This is a chance to see some truly heavy
hitters and big guns relatively early in their career. Casey Burns, and Ron
Liberti, two artists who have made national names for themselves working
within the field of the hand printed rock music poster will be showing.
Stacey Kirby, known for her installation and book art, and recently featured
at the North Carolina Museum of Art will also be showing. Other artists
showing include Allyson Mellberg and Jeremy Taylor, both members of the art
collective Team Lump (recently featured at the South Eastern Center for
Contemporary Art), as well as Daniel Bagnell, Tamara Galiano, Jody Cedzidlo,
and David Graedon.

This is the latest in the series of guest curated art shows at the Transom
Gallery. Each month a different local artist has been asked to organize a
show, and this is one of Transom's most ambitious to date. The guest curator
this month is David Graedon, a printmaker and sculptor based in Carrboro.
The opening will be held at the Transom Gallery located at 305 E. Chapel
Hill St. in Durham on Nov. 18th from 6-10 pm and by appointment afterward,
and will be up until Dec 16th. For further information, or to schedule an
appointment for a private showing, please direct correspondence to
transomgallery at gmail.com, or call Andrew Barco at 919-599-7904.
http://transomgallery.com.

Peacefire Gallery: In addition to running their gallery, Inga and Sima have
formed a non profit (501c3) called PRE (peacefire relief effort). This
organization provides ongoing direct relief to families and individuals that
are victims of natural disasters(including poverty). Please continue
donating food, school supplies, clothing, relocation assistance etc. If you
are interested in becoming a part of this effort via volunteering, goods or
monetary donation (for shipping), please contact Peacefire at 682-5808, 105
East Chapel Hill Street.
