PRESERVATION AWARDS NOMINATION FORM
APAC Invites Nominations till April 1

Look around your neighborhood. Who is doing something good, preserving
Durham's architectural and cultural heritage? The Architectural
Preservation and Awards Committee invites members of the Community to
nominate potential recipients for the George and Mary Pyne Preservation
Award and the Neighborhood Conservation Award.

The Pyne Award is given to both homeowners and commercial property owners
for sensitive restoration projects that preserve the architecture and
heritage of Durham. The Award can recognize either restoring properties as
they were historically intended, or adaptive use projects that reinvent the
use of a space while at the same time preserving the architectural flavor of
the original architect or builder.

The Neighborhood Conservation Award is given for saving the historic fabric
of Durham neighborhoods. For example, a new house in an older historic
neighborhood can be recognized, if the house was built to fit the character
of its neighborhood. With this new award, APAC also hopes to recognize
organizations that are having success in preserving historic neighborhoods.
For example, a group of neighbors in Lakewood were recognized for saving
houses there, one at a time, and finding owners. Thus they curbed the trend
of investors converting houses to rental properties throughout their
neighborhood. This category is broad and allows APAC to acknowledge a wide
array of efforts to preserve neighborhoods that often go unnoticed and
unrecognized.

The Committee recognizes award winners at the Historic Preservation
Society's annual dinner held in early summer. Send nominations to the
HPSD office, PO Box 25411, Durham, NC 27702, drop them off at our office on
the SECOND floor of the Snow Building, 331 West Main Street, Suite 210, or
e-mail info at preservationdurham.org.

Please explain why you think this person, building, or organization should
be recognized. If applicable, please share some of the building's history
and/or describe the project.

Remember two things. (1) Someone may need to call you to clarify what you
have written. Your contact information is required, although you may
request that your nomination remain anonymous to the owner. (2) Awards are
only granted to projects that are finished. If you know of a beautiful
restoration project but it won't be completed until May or June, please wait
until next year to nominate this project.

The members of APAC appreciate your nominations. While the committee does
make a concerted effort to find preservation projects across Durham each
year, your participation may help APAC find a wonderful gem not previously
known.
