Dear neighbors,

Please help us spread the word:

Old North Durham Neighborhood Association's third annual Silent/Live
Auction and Dessert fundraiser will be held on Friday, October 27,
downstairs at Calvary UMC, 304 E. Trinity Ave (enter off Elizabeth
St.). The silent auction will run from 6:30-7:30pm, after which
auctioneer extraordinaire John Parton (and, rumor has it, special
guest Sgt. Gunter) will auction off, live, some especially
interesting pieces. The event is open to all, and we hope you can attend.

Here's a partial list of items, made possible thanks to the generous
donations of neighbors in Old North Durham and beyond, including many
Durham businesses:

For those who like free stuff: free beverages, desserts, camaraderie,
and a belly dance demo by OND's own Betsy Bickel.

For those who value physical health and peace of mind: 50% off a
hypnosis session to help you quit smoking; gift certificates from the
Yoga Spot and 9th Street Dance; a one-hour belly-dancing lesson for
up to five people; three hours of bike maintenance/repair. (Some may
wish to follow up with the gift certificates for massage and
chiropractic care.) Also, a simple will and health care power of
attorney. (I'll also Positive Systems' computer consultation to this
list as well since sometimes, instead of beating your head against
your keyboard, it's better to call an expert.)

For those who love living in Durham: two hours of historic home
research; architectural design consultations; a Cottage Garden
landscape design consultation; and a framed DDI poster, signed by the
artist, promoting "Downtown Durham, Renaissance City."

For those who love Durham but enjoy getting away sometimes: an
equipped picnic basket; and stays at beach and mountain vacation retreats.

For those who enjoy tasty food: gift certificates from a variety of
restaurants including Nikos, Mellow Mushroom, and Durham's soon to be
newest (only) French bistro, RueCler; and homemade desserts including
pies, breads, and Mary Anne's amazing lemon pound cake.

For those who appreciate art and beauty: handmade jewelry, pottery,
and stained glass; a handmade bag and hand-crocheted ornaments;
dragonfly stakes from Vega Metals; an original Pamela Wedd Brown
framed lithograph; a memorabilia frame from Art Craft Framing Co.;
gift certificates from the Scrap Exchange, 9th Street Flowers, and
Claymakers; and a one hour lesson on guitar (or banjo or fiddle or harmonica).

For those who like mystery: a bag of not-yet-released books from the
Regulator Bookshop; a granite-topped kitchen cabinet rumored to be
linked to an infamous author; and an antique treasure trunk
containing a quilt that will cushion the other mystery items inside
(the donors have mentioned "crystal" and "porcelain," among other things).

What does this fundraiser allow ONDNA to do? Proceeds from previous
years' auctions have, among other things, provided resources for
community-building events such as National Night Out, potlucks, and
fall and spring spruce-ups; supported the cost of printing our
neighborhood newsletter; enabled ONDNA to help "sponsor a pillar" in
the new Farmer's Market Pavilion; and made possible support at the
"sponsor" level for Preservation Durham's historic home tour in our
neighborhood this past spring.

Hope you can make it on Friday!
