Showcase of Schools Offers Chance for Parents to Visit Schools

If your child is starting school or making a transition into a new school, you may want to participate in a tour during the month of February when all schools in the Durham Public Schools district open their doors to the community.

Showcase of Schools is a great time to talk with teachers and principals, and to see samples of student work. Or if you just want to meet your neighbors, the February Showcase of Schools offers the chance to do all these and more. All schools will hold at least two open houses during the Showcase month. Tour dates will be published on the DPS website and on DPS Ch. 4 by mid-January.

A nice start to the Showcase is the DPS Choice Fair on Saturday, January 27. The Fair features information booths for all magnet and year-round elementary and middle schools, and small high schools. Hillside High School is the site for the Fair, which starts at 10 am and ends at 2 pm.

Following is a brief FAQ about the tours/open houses.

Why is DPS offering school tours/open houses?
The open houses/tours will offer parents, students and others in the community the opportunity to visit schools. This may include parents whose children are entering kindergarten; those whose children are making a transition from elementary to middle or middle to high school; those whose children are attending a home, private or other school; and others who are just interested in learning about and visiting another school.

What do I have to do to sign up for a tour/open house?
Some schools require you to call ahead and register for a particular tour time. Others do not require any sign-up and parents can simply show up at the appropriate time. Please check the tour listing to find out if registration is required for the tour you’re interested in attending.

How long does a tour/open house last?
Participants are usually in and out of a school in an hour or so depending on your questions. Principals/Assistant Principals generally start the tour with a short presentation highlighting features of the school. After a short question-and-answer period, there are generally classroom tours. If you have time limitations, you may want to call the school to ask about the tour length.

How many tours/open houses can I attend?
            As many as you like.

Where can I find out more about the Showcase?
DPS has a special website www.dpsnc.net/showcase and tour dates and times also are on Cable Ch. 4.

Hi, David!

I left you a message about this, but I am hoping to send out the attached article and poster to as many neighborhood assns. as possible for them to include in their newsletters and post where they can. Could you pass this along, or help me figure out how best to do that w/out having to plug in a big # of email addresses? Thanks!
