Introductions – President David Harris opened the meeting. Members
introduced themselves.

Durham County Library – A lot is happening. We are reading Last Shot as a
community and will have lots of events this spring. The summer reading
program labels books by reading level, since one characteristic of kids who
are failing in school is that they don’t read over the summer. The library
is also doing a strategic plan with bus trips to other library systems and a
big planning session in May (please let David Harris know if you want to
participate). The Campaign for the Library is an effort to raise an
endowment of $5.2M for technology, capital improvements like public art, and
humanities like programs.

Emergency Management – Betty S. Moore talked about dealing with toxic stuff.
You know there might be a problem if you see no birds, hear no crickets
chirping, or see dead critters. If you think there is a problem, get
uphill, upwind, and upstream – you don’t need to take a closer look. We
will send out information on household emergency kits.

Water Management – Vicki Westbrook gave an update on lead. They are testing
more houses, both as part of their sample and at customer request. Out of
155 in 1983-85 sample window, one exceeds the 15ppb standard and 6 had
detectable lead. Out of 93 customer requests that are outside the 1983-85
sample window, 1 more exceeded standard and 5 had detectable lead. They
will continue to do this until May, then do analysis in June and start
another round in July. There will be a lead summit to look at overall
problem of lead in the environment, Durham has been a leader in testing
water and the ban on solder came from our efforts in the 1980’s. See
www.durhamnc.gov/departments/wm/ for more information.

There was no quorum so we didn’t vote on anything.

Other Items
1. We approved the January minutes. We accepted the treasurer’s report that
as of 2/12/07, we had $402.07 in checking and $2116.93 in savings.
Neighborhoods that have not already done so are urged to pay their dues.
2. The transportation folks have started work on the 2035 plan. See
www.dchcmpo.org/ for the draft demographic data they will base the plan on.
You might have concerns that it doesn’t include growth you already know will
be there and about where they show the growth. You can file comments until
March 27 or come to a public hearing at 9AM on March 14.
3. There is a draft report on park signage.
4. Tuscaloosa-Lakewood NA thinks it can see the light at the end of the
tunnel for their Neighborhood Protection Overlay.

The meeting was adjourned.
