Durham City Manager Announces Finalists for Police Chief Search
Public Forum for Citizens to Meet Finalists June 5

Durham, N.C. – Durham City Manager Patrick W. Baker has announced three finalists who are being considered for Durham ’s next police chief.

The finalists are:
· William Donald “Don” Green, who is currently deputy police chief in Knoxville , Tenn. In the law enforcement field for 29 years, Green has risen through the ranks since starting as an officer in 1979. He began his career in law enforcement as a patrol officer at the South Fulton , Tenn. , Police Department in 1977.

· Jose Lopez, Sr., who is currently assistant police chief of the Hartford Police Department in Hartford , Conn. Lopez joined the Hartford Police Department in 1983 as a patrolman and was named assistant chief in charge of the Patrol and Detective Bureau in 2006. He began his career in law enforcement in 1982 as an investigator with the New Jersey Department of Law and Public Safety.
· Ronald Hodge, who currently serves as deputy chief of the Durham Police Department. Hodge, who was named deputy chief in July 2005, has steadily risen through the ranks since joining the department as a patrol officer in 1983. Prior to joining Durham , Hodge held positions with a private security force and with the Virginia State Police and Virginia State University .

“I am thoroughly impressed with the solid experience of these finalists” Baker said. “They meet the criteria and qualities I had in mind for the next chief, including having risen through the ranks at a similar size police department, holding positions that allowed them to develop strong field and management experience, combined with an appreciation for strong community relations,” he said.

The three finalists were chosen by Baker from a group of five candidates following a round of interviews late last week with Baker, the deputy city managers, and a selection panel, which included police chiefs from other nearby cities and City department directors.

On Tuesday, June 5, 2007, the finalists will participate in a public forum, which is scheduled for 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., in Council Chambers on the first floor of City Hall, 101 City Hall Plaza, Durham.
