Sewer Repair Works Begin on Chapel Hill Road Next Week

Durham, N.C. – Contractors working for the City of Durham’s Department of
Water Management are scheduled to begin work on a sewer rehabilitation
project on Tuesday morning, July 24, which will require closing Chapel
Hill Road, between Vesson Avenue and McGehee Street.

Work is expected to be completed by August 24, 2007. It is expected that
Chapel Hill Road be closed to traffic in two phases.

Phase I Detour:  Northbound traffic will turn left onto Anderson, right
onto Vesson and left to return to Chapel Hill Road. Southbound traffic
will turn right onto Vesson, left on Anderson and right to return to
Chapel Hill Road.

Phase II Detour:  Northbound traffic will turn left onto McGehee, right
onto Vesson and left to return to Chapel Hill Road. Southbound traffic
will turn right onto Vesson, left on McGehee and right to return to Chapel
Hill Road.  This phase is expected to impact the largest volume of
traffic.

Although the project is expected to be completed prior to the start of the
school year on August 27, plans are in place to address a longer detour,
if necessary, to avoid using Vesson Avenue, which is adjacent to Lakewood
Elementary School.

Seventy percent of this project, which replaces a deteriorated sewer line
serving homes along Chapel Hill Road, will be financed by the 2005 Water
and Sewer bonds.

For more information about this sewer rehabilitation project, contact
Vicki Westbrook, deputy director for the City’s Department of Water
Management, at (919) 560-4381, extension 256 or via e-mail at
