City of Durham's Web Site Tops National Accessibility List

International Company's Ranking Measures How Available Web Sites Are for
the Disabled

 

Durham, N.C. - The City of Durham's external Web site, www.durhamnc.gov
<http://www.durhamnc.gov/> , has been named the most accessible
municipal sites in the United States by a French firm specializing in
making Web sites available to anyone regardless of their level of
ability or disability. 

 

Urbilog publishes a series of comparisons showing how major Web sites
measure up in validity and accessibility. The City's site was rated No.
1 among North American cities using standards set by the World Wide Web
Consortium (W3C). The standards require that persons with disabilities
be able to perceive, understand, navigate and interact with the Web, and
that they be able to contribute to the Web.

 

The City's efforts led to recognition as a "High Flyer" in the North
American Cities category. Other cities ranked behind Durham in the top
20 listing include Tulsa, Okla.; Minneapolis, Minn.; Dallas, Texas; and
Charlotte, N.C. 

 

The City's Department of Technology Solutions has taken steps to make
the Web site accessible, including many features implemented when the
site was redesigned in 2006.  The City's accessibility policy requires
that, upon request, all information contained on the site can be made
available in an alternative format, or arrangements can be made to meet
the needs of individuals with disabilities. For information on the
