Partially Treated Wastewater Discharged into New Hope Creek 

 

Durham, N.C. - The City of Durham's Department of Water Management has
reported that partially treated wastewater spilled into New Hope Creek
due to a rupture in an underground discharge line at the City's South
Durham Water Reclamation Facility.  The rupture was discovered in the
early morning hours of Wednesday, October 3, 2007.  

 

Approximately 50,000 gallons of partially treated wastewater flowed from
the ruptured line through a wooded area located on the facility's
property before mixing with fully treated wastewater, which discharges
into New Hope Creek.  Because the partially treated wastewater was mixed
with the fully treated wastewater, no adverse environmental impacts are
expected. The area around the spill has been flushed and pumped back
into the treatment facility.  Repairs to the ruptured line are underway.


 

The N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources has been
notified.  Staff from the City's Stormwater Division with the Department
of Public Works has also responded.
