City of Durham Annual Holiday Parade This Saturday
New Evening Parade and First-Ever Tree Lighting Ceremony
Durham, N.C. - On Saturday, December 1, 2007, the City of Durham will
officially kick-off the holiday season with the Annual Holiday Parade
and the first-ever Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony.
New for this year, the evening parade will begin at 4 p.m. on the corner
of Blackwell and Jackie Robinson Streets (corner of the Durham Bulls
Athletic Park and American Tobacco Historic District). North Carolina
Central University Chancellor Charlie Nelms will serve as this year's
Grand Marshall. Additional parade dignitaries will include Mayor William
V. "Bill" Bell of the Durham City Council and Chairwoman Ellen Reckhow
of the Durham County Board of Commissioners.
Also new for this year is the Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony, beginning
immediately after the parade at 6:30 p.m. in the CCB Plaza. Parade
spectators are encouraged to join Santa Claus, Mayor Bell and
Commissioner Reckhow as they officially conclude the day's festivities
with this special event.
Residents and visitors from throughout the Triangle are encouraged to
bring their family and friends to enjoy live entertainment, take in the
sparkle of lighted floats, and cheer on bands, drill teams, schools,
non-profit organizations, elected officials and corporate participants
as they make their way through downtown Durham.

PARADE FAST FACTS
Pre-Parade Celebration
Durham Parks and Recreation (DPR) will pre-parade celebrations at two
sites. Music lovers will enjoy the line-up in the heart of downtown on
the CCB Plaza (201 Corcoran Street, home of Major the Bull) from 2 p.m.
- 4 p.m. Percussion lovers will dance to the beat of the drums at
Durham Central Park Pavilion (502 Foster Street) from 2 p.m. until the
parade arrives.

New Parade Route
This year's new parade route begins at the corner of Jackie Robinson and
Blackwell Streets, and will travel up Blackwell Street across Pettigrew
Street, cross the railroad tracks, continue north past the CCB Plaza,
right onto E. Chapel Hill Street, then left on N. Mangum Street, left
onto Morgan Street, right onto Foster Street and will end at the corner
of Foster and Geer Streets.
Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony
As soon as the parade concludes at Durham Central Park, spectators are
invited to return to the CCB Plaza at 6:30 p.m. to experience the first
tree lighting ceremony in the new CCB Plaza. Mayor Bell and Santa Claus
will participate in this ceremony to officially conclude the day's
events.
Parking
With such a large influx of people expected into the downtown area,
residents and visitors are encouraged to evaluate their parking plans
before arriving for the parade. To avoid being towed during this event,
drivers should not park along the parade route. No parking will be
permitted on the following Durham streets:
* Blackwell Street between Lakewood Avenue and Pettigrew Street
* Ramseur Street between Corcoran and Mangum Streets
* Mangum Street between Ramseur and Morgan Streets
* Morgan Street between Mangum and Foster Streets
* Foster Street between Morgan and Geer Streets
Parking is available in various parking garages and lots in downtown
Durham as well as along some city streets. There is also parking
available for a $2 event fee at the Centre Garage (300 W. Morgan Street)
and the Corcoran Street Garage (101 E. Corcoran Street).
Free Shuttle Service After the Parade
DPR will provide free shuttle service back to the starting point of the
parade at the Durham Athletic Park (DAP). The shuttle will run every
15-20 minutes from 5 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. The pick-up location is in the
parking lot of the DAP, the historic ballpark located on Foster Street.
