Clean Energy Durham is seeking a Community Outreach Coordinator.
Clean Energy Durham is a newly-formed non-profit organization that promotes energy conservation and the use of renewable energy throughout Durham County. It is pioneering neighborhood-based community outreach and seeks to make Durham a national model regarding energy use. The Community Outreach Coordinator facilitates and coordinates neighborhood-based energy-saving activities. This position reports to the Executive Director, or to the Chair of the Board of Directors until such time as an Executive Director is hired.
Duties and responsibilities:
• Develop creative, effective, and replicable techniques for engaging households in neighborhood-based energy-saving activities.
• Train and provide organizational assistance to neighborhood residents in order to develop effective, active, neighbor-led committees that involve neighborhood households in energy-saving activities.
• Engage residents of diverse ethnic and racial backgrounds in becoming involved in neighborhood-based activities to reduce household energy use.
• Identify potential new neighborhood leaders and engage them in neighborhood energy committees.
• Promote tracking of household energy use in neighborhoods and gather household energy use data.
• Maintain communication between neighborhood energy committees and between these committees and Clean Energy Durham.
• Solicit and help write success stories of household energy use reduction.
• Work with Executive Director on media strategy and obtain media coverage for neighborhood energy-saving activities.
• Work with Executive Director on building coalitions and partnerships with other local organizations, businesses, and institutions aimed at reducing energy use in Durham households.
• Identify potential donors to Clean Energy Durham and assist with fundraising.
• Write progress reports as requested.
• Make oral presentations on Clean Energy Durham activities.
• Represent Clean Energy Durham at community events and meetings.
• Work with the Executive Director and Board of Directors on strategic planning.
• Perform other duties appropriate and consistent with the mission of Clean Energy Durham.
• Report to the Executive Director of Clean Energy Durham.
Required skills, knowledge, and abilities:
• Strong interpersonal skills.
• Familiarity with principles and tools that strengthen community involvement.
• Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.
• Ability to understand and relate to the needs of members of the Durham community.
• Ability to work independently and exercise initiative, creativity, and resourcefulness.
• Ability to manage multiple tasks, plan effectively, and meet deadlines.
• Ability to provide clear direction to others.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel.
Minimum education and experience:
• Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
• One year experience in community organizing.
Other:
• Availability to work nights and weekends as necessary.
• Own transportation.
• Own computer and internet connection.
• Ability to speak Spanish a plus.
Salary:
This is a temporary part-time position at 20 to 30 hours per week for 6 months. Salary is $20,000 per year for a half-time position or $30,000 per year for three-quarter time position. Some benefits provided. There is potential for continuing beyond 6 months if funding can be established by the organization.
