A Look At What's Going On Inside Durham's City Hall

New Episode Begins Airing Friday, December 21 on Time Warner Cable
channel 8

Durham, N.C. - The following highlights from the December 17, 2007
Durham City Council meeting and other topics of interest will be
featured in the upcoming episode of City Hall This Week. The show will
begin airing on Friday, December 21 at 8 p.m.

City Operates Under Severe Mandatory Water Restrictions

* The City continues to operate under Stage IV Severe Mandatory
Conservation measures required by Durham's Water Conservation ordinance.
Among the restrictions: no watering or sprinkling of any lawn, grass,
trees, golf greens or flowers. Watering of vegetable gardens or
ornamental shrubs is not allowed, except by hand-held container during
the specified hours of 5 a.m. to 8 a.m. or 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturdays
only. For the very latest information on water conservation in Durham,

Durham's Top Administrator Transitioning to New Position

* Durham City Manager Patrick Baker
<http://www.durhamnc.gov/departments/manager/> will replace retiring
City Attorney Henry Blinder. Baker announced on December 11 that he
will serve in his current role through the completion of the 2008 budget
process in June. Baker, who has served as city manager for the past
three years, says he made his decision in order to be able to spend more
time with his family. Karen Sindelar, an assistant city attorney, will
serve as interim city attorney until Baker assumes the position next
summer.

Rolling Hills/Southside Redevelopment Project Moves Forward

* The City Council took a number of steps toward furthering the
Rolling Hills/Southside Redevelopment Project. McCormack Baron Salazar,
Inc. and Struever Bros. Eccles & Rouse were approved as the development
team for the Rolling Hills site. $325,000 in housing bond program
income will be spent as matching funds for planning, engineering,
surveying, and related services to conduct a study on what the
redevelopment project should look like. The Council also approved
spending $2.7 million in housing bond program income to begin the
acquisition of privately-owned residential properties within the Rolling
Hills development and to help with relocation of affected homeowners and
tenants. The redevelopment of the Rolling Hills and Southside
neighborhoods will be carried out through public, private, and
institutional partnerships.

Durham Police Department to Arm Officers With TASERS(r)

* The City Council approved a $158,533.00 contract that will
allow the Durham Police Department <http://www.durhampolice.com/> to
buy 110 TASERS(r) and accessories for its patrol officers. Department
officials say they believe TASERS(r) are the most effective, less-lethal
tool on the market today and will offer another weapon option for
officers. Their goal is to eventually arm all officers with TASERS(r),
which would cost between $500,000 and $600,000. Additional TASERS(r)
will be purchased as funds become available.
