Subject: [THNA] Muddy Water Watch
I attended an informative presentation last night at Duke Law School.
Dean Naujoks, Riverkeeper for the Upper Neuse, described an exciting new
project to improve the quality of water in North Carolina's waterways.
The number 1 source of water pollution today is sediment run-off from
construction projects. This is not just innocuous dirt. The runoff often
contains high concentrations of fecal material and heavy metals, and the
resulting pollution kills wildlife and can foul our precious drinking
water supplies. North Carolina has only about 30 full-time site
inspectors; there are more than 9,000 active construction sites at any
one time.
The solution: train citizen volunteers who will visit construction
sites, inspect the runoff control measures, and report back to local
inspectors when they find apparent violations of best management
practices. The trainings start next week at the Brier Creek Community
Center in Raleigh, and continue for several months. For more
information, go to http://www.muddywaterwatch.org/
I posted this to the TPNA, OND, THNA, and FHNA lists. Please cross-post
this information to other lists (and on blogs!) as appropriate. Thanks!
